For one day in Macau, focus on the historic centre: see Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul’s, then choose a museum or A-Ma Temple. This peninsula-focused plan brings together heritage landmarks with different opening patterns, so you can shape the day around the places you most want to visit.

  • Central landmark: Largo de Santo Agostinho is about a 6-minute walk from Metropole Hotel, where three-star hotel rooms are available.
  • Open at any hour: Senado Square and the façade at the Ruins of St. Paul’s.
  • Museum option: Macao Museum, with Monday closures except on public holidays.
  • Temple option: A-Ma Temple; published opening times differ.
Begin with the historic centre

Begin with the historic centre

The historic centre gives your Macau one day itinerary a practical focus, with heritage landmarks to build the day around. The area also includes the Holy House of Mercy and Dom Pedro V Theatre.

If you want a route-led approach, a Macau walking tour is another way to frame a day in the peninsula’s historic centre.

Visit Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul’s

Visit Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul’s

Senado Square is open around the clock, and the façade and staircase at the Ruins of St. Paul’s can also be seen at any hour. The remains are those of the Church of Mater Dei and the adjacent St. Paul’s College: the church was built between 1602 and 1640, and both structures were destroyed by fire in 1835.

The Ruins of St. Paul’s stand at Company of Jesus Square. The college site is open from 09:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:30, and entry is free.

The Museum of Sacred Art and Crypt is also there, but it closes on Tuesdays from 14:00 onward; it is open on public holidays, and can admit up to 20 visitors at a time.

Choose a museum or heritage stop

Macao Museum is a good choice if you want to add a museum visit to the day; its schedule and admission rules are worth checking before you set out. It is open from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30, and is closed on Mondays except on public holidays.

Admission costs MOP 15 for adults and MOP 8 for student-card holders. Children aged 12 or under, seniors aged 65 or above, and Macao Resident Identity Card holders enter free. Admission is also free on Tuesdays and on the 15th of every month.

The museum is housed at Mount Fortress, whose gardens are open from 07:00 to 19:00. The public entrance is at Praceta do Museu de Macau; the disabled-access entrance is at the fortress’s south gate on Caminho dos Artilheiros.

For a different heritage stop, the Pawn Shop Museum and Security Forces Museum of Macau are also in the historic-centre area.

Continue to A-Ma Temple or plan for Macao Tower

Continue to A-Ma Temple or plan for Macao Tower

A-Ma Temple offers a temple visit with a long history: it existed before the city of Macao came into being. The Hall of Benevolence is believed to date to 1488, and the complex reached its present scale in 1828.

Published opening times for A-Ma Temple range from a 07:00 to 08:00 opening, with closing at 18:00. If you would rather consider Macao Tower, its Macao Tower visitor guide can help you plan that visit.

Check transport and opening times before setting out

Opening times vary across this itinerary, and some museum visits depend on the day of the week. Check the official site before you go, particularly for current museum and temple schedules.

For information on getting around the area, the guide to Macau transport and Barra station covers that subject.
